Wood is in good condition and the black paint is intact.

2-Piece design with dowel attachments
Wooden sandcasting molds were used to produce an initial metal item which would be shaped further.
The cast form pattern might be lathe turned, filed, drilled, sanded and finished.
These days, 3-D printers are replacing some of the functions of this kind of very labor-intensive production.
Almost every shaped metal item used in all industries may have begun its life as a cast in a mold.
A few small dings and very attractive, as one might expect for over 3 score years of age.
