Vintage Mahogany Wood Patterns Mounted in Mold Box Foundry Casting
This was a Mold box to make a core box pattern casting.
My father said that they would make the mold box, then make a plaster  or plastic cast from it, then cast in either plastic or metal, to make the pattern. That pattern would be used to make a metal casting.
Box overall is 22 1/4" , by  13 1/2" , 2 3/4" deep. It is made of wood ply.
Patterns made from solid mahogany are:
16" long, approx 2 3/4" at the widest, 1 1/2" deep
Overall weight of the box/ pattern is 10 pounds.
Today, there are almost no molds made anymore from wood.  They are either made from plastic stock or metal.
This mold  is from an age of days gone by, where most patterns were made from wood.
Pattern making is a  highly skilled trade that required a lot of handwork years ago, now most everything is made with CAD CAM machines.   Pattern making required often working within 5/1000ths of an inch, and was one of the highest paid trades.
My father is winding down his 50 year pattern industry business, and this came from his pattern archives.
Specifically, I do not know what  this was for, it is old enough that records are no longer available to identify  it. It was for some large piece of machinery.
This was the original wood mold, my fathers' business was subcontracted by a  foundry to make this original mold.
I packed this at the shop, it came out of  storage, we vacuumed them, removing lots of old sawdust and some grime, but they are still somewhat dirty,  I am mentioning this so that you do not open them up somewhere that you would not want dirty items on.
