Lauryn Rodgers is a self-taught artist who has resided most of his life in southeast Michigan. Like many who have grown up in the shadow of the automobile capital of the world, he has been affected by and indoctrinated into the gritty, blue-collar, earthiness of industrial Detroit. His art clearly reflects his connection with automotive manufacturing.
Lauryn’s artistic endeavors are best described as combinations of assemblage art, mechanical sculpting and found object upcycling.  His work is highly industrial by design, utilizing parts from old machinery, vintage cash registers and transportation items while being juxtaposed with vintage doll parts, soft linens, leather and animal bones.
His creations give the appearance of having been damaged from abuse, to have been discarded, then resurrected. They are intended to lead the viewer to curiosity, to discovery, possibly to a bit of controversy.
While his pieces may foster reminiscence of the past, they also dispense an uninvited look into a dark unrecognizable future. Yet in the end, the pieces look to his faith, as they reveal and examine the activity of a living God.  They speak of promise, they speak of change, they speak of new life. These pieces demand further thought, further consideration. At minimum, they demand another look.
