Three (3) Wooden Foundry Casting Patterns, Industrial, Multi-Piece
This sale is for three (3) wooden sand casting foundry patterns, which would create a hollow void in a special sand casting mold, and then molten metal would be poured in, creating, after the metal cooled, a metal duplicate of the wood pattern. The metal piece would then be machined into a final product.
These old foundry molds were made at a time when most patterns were made from wood. They are made out of solid mahogany, which is a hard wood to work with, but was used for strength and stability in foundry sand casting. Patternmaking is still a highly skilled trade that requires a lot of knowledge and skill.
There are almost no molds made from wood anymore. Now most everything is made with CAD CAM machines, or rapid prototype 3-D printers.
