Description:
An exceptionally rare antique amulet sculpted in the form of a meditating Buddha of bronze alloy, acquired from a temple precinct in the Kamphaeng Phet province of north central Thailand.
Overview:
The exquisite art of Kamphaeng Phet was heavily influenced and intergrated with Sukhothai Style of Buddhist Art. During the 14th century the city of Kampphaeng Phet provided an important part of the defense system of the Sukhothai Kingdom, providing a dominant stronghold of warfare against neighboring invasions, while at the same time connecting Sukhothai with Ayutthaya and Lanna. Kamphaeng Phet demonstrated a relevant feature with the three possessions and also developed an individualizes art style, which has become the remarkable identity of Kamphaeng Phet.
Image Details:
Sculpted in the form of a meditating Buddha seated on a double lotus petal throne, portrayed sitting cross-legged in the Vajrasana pose, and with both hands overlapping one another in the Dhyana mudra, the attainment of spiritual perfection, gesture. The image is extremely well modeled, wearing a long sanghati robe in the 'Open Mode' worn covering the left shoulder. His face has a serene gentle expression, defined by downcast eyes, arched eyebrows above a prominent nose, a well-shaped mouth, and elongated earlobes framing the face. Hair curls carved in relief separate the hairline from his forehead, with his head surmounted by a domed Ushnisha, rising tall flame finial. Buddha sits on a pedestal decorated with intricately carved lotus petals.
