LP THUADLuang Phor Tuad is mentioned in the early regional histories of southern Thailand, but his life is mainly preserved in oral traditions. Stories of the famous monk were passed on by word of mouth for centuries. As a result, it is a mixture of Buddhist elements: early signs, alleged magic, travel, study, meditation, and eventual “sainthood.”
Many people in Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia believe that amulets created in Luang Phor Tuad image hold great protective powers granting safety in times of distress, especially saving the lives of believers from seemingly fatal automobile accidents. Phra Archan Tim Dharmataro, abbot of Wat Changhai is the first creator of Luang Phor Tuad amulets.
The legend of a high priest, Luang Phor Tuad (LP Tuad) or Somdej Phako was originated from Kingdom of Ayutthaya period (it was Thailand capital that existed from 1350 to 1767) and have lived during the reign of King Maha Dhammaraja, in the mid-sixteenth century; his exact date of birth is not known. There is no document evidence available to prove, just recounted from ancestors in his holiness. This information was composed to be LP Tuad biography.
More than three hundred years ago, there lives a very famous priest by name LP Tuad. According to folk tales, LP Tuad was born in the 4th lunar month on the year of the dragon, which may be born in 1582 (B.E. 2125) “Buddhist Era” and some said he was born in the year of the Ox in 1588 (B.E. 2131). However, his period of birth can be assumed to be during the Reign of King Maha Dhammaraja which may be B.E. 2125 (1582) or B.E. 2131 (1588). His parent gave birth to him at the ages of 40’s, at Sathing Phra District, Songkhla Province, Southern Thailand. LP Tuad was named “Phu” when he is born. Many centuries ago, his ancestors came from China and settled down in Singora, Thailand.
LP Tuad parents, Nai Hu and his wife Mae Chan, a very poor couple, but they maintained a good and virtuous moral. They often went to the temple on the religious day doing merit and attended the preaching regularly. They were faithful to the Buddha. They stayed in a hut near an old temple, called Wat “Temple” Khokosan. They were employed by a rich family named Phan as farmers just to make a living. Phan had a large number of workers and slaves.
There is a day which was in the harvest time; Phan urged all his workers, slaves to reap his rice in the paddy-field. Among these was Mae Chan who just gave birth was also asked to reap the rice without excuses, Eventually, Mae Chan also agreed to do so.
She brought her newborn baby along with her, while she was to work in the field; she put her baby sleeping in the cradle by hanging a cloth between two big shady trees near the paddy field. When its time to breast-feed the baby. She walked towards and saw a large snake curled around the child. She asked for help. In distress she cried out to her husband who rushed over to assist the infant along with all other laborers’.
To everyone's surprise the child remained unharmed, but his mother was fearful of the outcome and instinctively recalled an old traditional belief that this snake might be the god created vision. Finally, she realized and prayed to the snake by offering flowers and rice cake for the safety of their son, with her sincere praying the snake spit out a snake pearl on the baby’s and left away. It’s something like a clear crystal ball. All the peoples are very curious and gathered round to have a view. When Phan saw the clear snake pearl, he became greedy and appealed that snake pearl from Mae Chan by offering good price in return. Initially, Mae Chan disagreed because the snake pearl belonged to her son, but Phan was appealing her continually. Moreover, Phan increase his offered with Mae Chan for the exchange of the snake pearl.
Eventually, Mae Chan agreed respectfully with Phan and presented the snake pearl to him. Phan was very happy with the snake pearl back home. Unfortunately after three days, all members in his family suddenly fell ill, while he himself used to dream about bad omen each time when he slept. Phan than consulted a medium and was told that he had owned something that doesn’t belong to him. Phan was scared and returned the snake pearl to Mae Chan. After than, the snake pearl remained in the safe possession of LP Tuad parents until LP Tuad was sufficiency to take care by himself. On this day, the snake pearl is remained and displayed for viewing at Wat Phra Kho.

These combination alphabet words were to be arranged into a certain sutra within seven days, if the task was accomplished, the King of Sri Lanka would present King of Thailand with 7 boats made of gold. However, should the task be unsuccessful, Thailand would have to surrender its sovereignty (independence) to Sri Lanka. The King of Thailand was doubtful with the opponent and accepts the challenge, and gathered all his country's learned monks to deal with the problem. Many have tried but were not successful.
Invitation notice was made by the King to look for high educated monk or priests who is capable to arrange the sutra within the limited time. On the fourth night the King dreamed of a white elephant whistling shrill sound in the dazzling light. The next morning the king consulted a fortune-teller, and was told that it was a good sign as a sage was likely to appear to solve the problem. The King was uncertain. On the sixth day there is still nobody could arrange the sutra alphabets successfully. It made so concern to the King of Thailand.
